Bunting for August 1st

Hand paints a fabric bag with textile paint. Various paints and a self-designed Switzerland garland are on the craft table – a creative DIY idea for August 1st.

For August 1st, I crafted this pennant chain, with each flag featuring a different motif typical of Switzerland: from pocket knives to cows and cheese, everything is included.

Swiss Flair to Hang Up

The pennant chain is perfect as a decoration for August 1st, whether by the window, over the table, or out on the balcony. It instantly brings a festive atmosphere into the house.

You don't need much: a fabric pennant, pens or paints. For example, I used Kreul paints. They apply beautifully to fabric, and the colours really pop.

Age: From 8 years

Duration: 1 hour

Difficulty: Easy

For this project, you will need:

Painted fabric pennant chain with typical Swiss motifs such as chocolate, cheese, fondue, and alpine landscape. Colourful fabric paints are ready for use next to it.
Festively set table with a homemade Swiss garland, paper fans with animal motifs, and red party curtains in the background. Creative decoration for August 1st or a Swiss themed party.

Creative and Individual

Each flag was designed differently, some with a mountain landscape, others with chocolate or the Swiss cross. That's what makes the chain so special. No two parts are exactly alike, yet everything fits together perfectly.

Easy Motif Selection

Find your favourite motifs online, such as a beautiful alpine backdrop, an edelweiss, or a typical Swiss symbol, and trace them onto the fabric using our LED light table. This creates especially beautiful and precise motifs, even if you're not an experienced artist.

Step-by-step instructions

1st step

Place the desired motif under the fabric of the pennant chain.

Step 2

Trace the image under the fabric with a pen.

Motive are transferred onto the fabric garland with a red colored pencil. A light table helps to precisely trace the template onto the fabric for the homemade Swiss garland.

Step 3

Place a mat under the pennant banner to protect the work surface.

Hands insert a cardboard template into an empty pennant field of the fabric garland. The template serves as a base for painting and creating more Swiss motifs.

Step 4

Color and outline with the desired color.

Step 5

Place a thin cloth over the pennant banner and iron carefully to fix the color.

The painted fabric garland is fixed with an iron. Ironing makes the textile paints durable and washable.

Step 6

And now the pennant banner is ready to be hung for August 1st.
